Railway Tavern, Brightlingsea

A fellow CAMRA member once described this pub as “basic” and received a certain amount of criticism. Still – it’s a good word and helps describe the timeless quality that this pub has. If you think the future of pubs is the high-street chain selling cold, big brand beers you might not actually like this establishment but for those that enjoy the relaxing simplicity of a decent pint and a bit of conversation you’ll feel right at home here.

The pub stands close to the centre of the old seaport and draws a friendly local crowd. It has a close relationship with another Essex Brewery – Crouch Vale – and generally features their Best Bitter within a constantly changing rotation.

The real secret though is almost hidden away and you must not come close to this pub without experiencing the legend that is Crab & Winkle Mild. This dark beer is a delicious, full-bodied mild that appeals to everyone – including those that claim they don’t like real ale or dark beer!

Crab & Winkle is brewed in the, recently expanded, microbrewery in one of the back rooms. The pub also brews Bladderwrack Stout, Fireside Porter and Historic Nettle Ale and all these brews can be seen at local CAMRA beer festivals as well as in the pub itself.
