Community Pubs Month, April 2012

Community Pubs Month is a campaign that was launched by CAMRA to:

  • Increase footfall into pubs
  • To promote pub events during April
  • To achieve media coverage for pubs during April to help raise the profile of pub going

Events

All pubs are able to upload their events directly to the Community Pubs Month website, so visit that site to see what is on.

In addition to events at individual pubs, the Tendring branch has organised a few events which involve more than one pub. Details of these are below.

All month

Tendring CAMRA have arranged with 28 real ale pubs in the district to participate in a "passport" scheme. Collect a stamp on your passport at each pub you visit during April.

  • If you collect 8 or more, you can have free admission and festival glass at either the Harwich Jubeerlee Festival (31 May - 2 June) or the Clacton Real Ale & Cider Festival (22-25 August).
  • If you collect 16 or more, you also get a free pint at the same festival
  • If you collect 24 or more, you will get a further free pint at the same festival

A 6.6 mile ramble from pub to pub. Starts at the Red Lion, Kirby-le-Soken at about 12:30, and finishing at The Victory, Walton-on-the-Naze (due to arrive about 16:50). Times below are therefore approximate based on speed of walking.

For those travelling by public transport, the number 8 bus from Clacton Railway station stop 1 arrives at Kirby-le-Soken at about 12:33, and a train leaves Walton-on-the-Naze at 17:30

Tendring CAMRA shall put on transport from Harwich and Clacton to the start and from the finish, if numbers are sufficient.

Please note: this route begins by following footpaths across fields which may be muddy. Please dress appropriately.

  • 12:40 - 13:10 Red Lion, Kirby-le-Soken
  • 14:10 - 14:40 Ship, Great Holland
  • 15:20 - 15:50 Lock & Barrel, Frinton-on-Sea

Saturday 21st - Sunday 22nd April - Leisure Hunt

During the course of this weekend there will be two "leisure hunts" running for the whole weekend; one in Brightlingsea and one in Harwich. These have been designed to be child friendly.

Solve the clues/answer the questions from either leisure hunt sheet (a bit like a treasure hunt for those that have done those previously) to be in with a chance of winning a prize. There will also be a prize for the best childrens entry.

The following pubs will be participating in the Brightlingsea Leisure Hunt, and should have question sheets available:

  • Brewers Arms
  • Kings Head
  • Olde Swan Hotel
  • Railway Tavern
  • Rosebud
  • Yachtsman's Arms

The following pubs will be participating in the Harwich Leisure Hunt, and should have question sheets available:

  • New Bell Inn
  • Hanover Inn
  • Alma Inn

Saturday 28th April - Morris Traveller

Tendring CAMRA will be running a coach trip between a number of pubs across the district, and will be conveying the newly formed Leading Lights Morris Dancers to where they will perform. Spectators and drinkers can accompany the Morris Dancers for only £5.00 a head.

The coach will leave from the High Lighthouse in old Harwich (CO12 3NB) with the "Leading Lights Morris" on board at 10.30 am. Pickups will be along Main Road, High Street and Oakley Road and then along the direct route to Clacton. The coach will then travel out to The Crown at Ardleigh and work back to Clacton then onto Harwich. The first person on and off the coach will probably be away for about 7 hours.

The return route will be the reverse of the outward journey. The coach cannot go off route, however it will stop on route to let people off. We hope that most people will wear a CAMRA or local Beer Festival T-shirt.

As spaces are limited, please e-mail us if you are interested in travelling with us, along with your preferred pickup point.

Approximate times are as follows:

  • 10:30 Pickup at High Lighthouse, Harwich
  • 11:10-12:00 Old Lifeboat House, Clacton-on-Sea
  • 12:25-13:15 Crown, Ardleigh
  • 13:30-14:30 Snooty Fox, Great Bromley
  • 14:40-15:30 Plough, Great Bentley
  • 15:45-16:35 White Hart, Weeley Heath
  • Drop off at Old Lifeboat House
  • Return to Harwich
